Motor vehicle accidents and crashes continue to be a major issue in Australia
and it is time that we all started to do our bit to make the roads safer. As a
first step, drivers should be provided with training that is relevant to the
vehicle, road conditions and environment they operate in.
1,611 people were killed in Motor Vehicle Crashes in Australia during
2007.
This equates to 31 people per week. This isn’t just a statistic, these people
are mums, dads, brothers and sisters and the loss of a family member due to a
motor vehicle accident is devastating. This doesn’t include the thousands that
are seriously injured.
The team at DSA realise that there is more to making the roads safe then a one
day driving course, road safety advertisements or catching speeding drivers, so
we encourage everyone to step back and look at the big picture. If you are
taking unnecessary risks, driving when tired or under the influence, speeding or
forgetting to wear your seatbelt – make an effort in 2008 to change that. Every
little bit helps and it might be your own life you save.
Important Information about Workplace Road Safety.
If
you are an employer, no matter how large or small your business, you have a
responsibility and ‘duty of care’ for the safety and health of your employees.
The Occupational Safety and Health Act (1984) requires you to insure that
your employees are not exposed to hazards in the workplace.
The act requires you to provide –
·
Safe workplaces, safe plant and safe systems of work; and
·
Safety information, instruction, training and supervision.
Making a difference
Until recently, the implications of vehicles and safe driving as safety and
health matters have been underestimated both by businesses employing
professional drivers and those for whom driving is not a core business, but
whose employees are required to drive as part of their duties.
A
well designed workplace road safety strategy along with appropriate training and
education will provide companies with many short and long term benefits.
Benefits include –
·
Reduced exposure to workers compensation claims
·
Increased awareness of road safety issues reducing risk taking
behaviour
·
Reduction in accident and incident rates
·
Reduction in lost time injuries
·
Reduced insurance claims and premiums
·
Reduction in vehicle expenses (fuel/tyres)
·
Improved staff morale
DSA will assist you in achieving a best practice driver and vehicle safety
system.
