Safe Driving Tips
Become a safer driver with some helpful driving tips from DSA

DSA want to help keep YOU and YOUR FAMILY safe on the road.

Here are a few suggestions to help you prepare for your next road trip away.

Planning -Before you attempt any trips away you need to sit down and work out a plan. Start by jotting down these points and then make notes next to each to help you plan your trip.

Vehicle - What does it need? Is it ready? Have you checked lights, tyres, tow bar and removed all the unnecessary loose items?

Time - Most important! Allow enough time to get where you are going. Why not stop somewhere on the way for a night if it means reducing the driving time to a maximum of maybe 4-6 hours a day. Take regular breaks and consider your passengers comfort also. When its time to leave - pack up early and take your time driving home. Even plan a stop or two along the way to check out sights. One of the biggest issues is people rush!!

Kids - If they are coming make sure they understand why you need to concentrate on your driving. You can give them things to do and even maybe explain what your doing while your driving - like recognising poor drivers or road hazards. Take regular breaks and if you need to talk to them - STOP THE CAR FIRST!

Seatbelts - These are very important when things go wrong. Make sure everyone understands they need to be on at all times you are seated in the vehicle and how to fit them correctly. There should be no slack in the belt and no twists. If you have an older car it pays to have them checked and they are not expensive to change.

Pets - If your pets are coming make sure they are behind a suitable pet/cargo barrier and if possible have a suitable pet harness on. At no times should they be free to move around the vehicle as they can cause a distraction for the driver.

Towing - When you load your trailer/caravan, the weight should be even over the wheels/axle of the trailer. The tow vehicle should be level when everything is hooked up and loaded. Very important to check tyre pressures and if your not sure speak to a tyre expert or contact us for some information.

Fatigue - If you have had a late night, get plenty of rest before driving. Fatigue effects your decision making and ability to control a vehicle. If you are tired - STOP! Do not risk driving tired - it is better to overnight or stay an extra day then run the chance of having a serious crash by falling asleep at the wheel.

These simple steps will help keep you and your family safe. Make the decision now to be a safe driver and make every trip enjoyable and safe.
