Confused? Often people (including the media, politicians and so called road safety
experts) confuse Advanced with Defensive driving courses so we thought its time to clear
up things up a bit!
Defensive Driving
courses primarly are designed
to educate drivers on how to stay safe on the road. DSA Defensive driving
include theory and practical exercises to develop an appreciation of the risks
associted with driving. Ideal for all drivers and all
vehicles.
Advanced Driving
courses are
available for law enforcement, the military, motorsport competitors and selected
organisations with a requirement for either high speed or precision driving. Although
some skills may hep drivers in an emergency - these courses are not recommended to any driver
unless they have first completed a Defensive Driving
course.

TIWI Island (NT)
DSA Trainer Brad Bird has just returned from TIWI Island where he
designed and delivered a custom 4WD package to help drivers operate safely in a variety of
environments.
New Trainer
- Kalgoorlie (WA) Mike
Elliot has joined the team at DSA as the new Kalgoorlie based trainer. Mike brings with him a great
deal of experience and is available to deliver training anywhere in the goldfields
region.
Armidale / Newcastle (NSW) DSA have secured two new
training venues to service the Hunter Valley and Northern Rivers regions of NSW. Call for

 Defensive Driver
Training
- Learn how to avoid most common
crashes.
- Learn about ABS/ESP and other safety
features.
- Practice emergency braking in a safe
environment.
This full day course encourages you to learn
about your car, your driving and how to drive defensively.
An interesting multimedia theory presentation
covers a wider vareity of topics and includes discussions on several key areas (duration 2-3
hours).
Drivers also get to practice emergency braking in a
controlled and safe environment (duration 3-4 hours).
The experience and knowledge you gain from this
course will change the way you drive for ever.

 A few words from Driver Skills Australia - Director - Mark
Butcher
“After many years
experience in the driver training industry, I have learnt that 'the thing we fear most we have already
experienced'.
This recognised
learning pattern can explain how we are more cautions the older we get.
Todays driver's are not provided with any training in handling a car in an emergency
- or even in difficult conditions.
Isn’t it time that the
Government and Road Safety Authorities realised that mum and dad are not professional driver trainers and only
young drivers need qualified and experienced trainers.
Although a one day
course is not the solution to everything - it does allow drivers to practice skills and gain valuable knowledge in
a safe environment. This leads to a significant reduction in the rate of crashes and fatalities and creates safer
roads for us all to share.
How much can the
government spend on road safety adverts and crash barriers before someone has the balls to realise
its human's that cause crashes not the roads or conditions.
Drivers need to be provided with an opportunity to experience
first hand the effect of speed, reaction time and road surface before they are allowed to drive
unsupervised on the road.
Training needs to be done in a safe controlled environment
with professional trainers and needs to be supported by a comprehensive knowledge/classroom based
program.
No simulators or skid cars – the real thing is
the only way drivers will learn and this is what Driver Skills Australia is all about. Giving drivers the
chance to learn how to drive safely and responsibly.
